Updated September 2026: There is no general government mandate for every contractor to become “NIST certified by 2026.” NIST publishes cybersecurity guidance, including the Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) and SP 800-171. Contract requirements depend on the information handled and the terms of the specific solicitation or contract. Some U.S. Department of Defense contracts also specify a CMMC level.
What applies to your business?
Start by identifying the contracts you hold or bid on and whether your systems process Federal Contract Information (FCI) or Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Review the applicable clauses and required CMMC level with your contracting and compliance advisers. The NIST CSF helps any organization organize cybersecurity risk, but using it does not by itself grant a certification or satisfy every contract.
Practical preparation steps
- Inventory systems, users, cloud services, and the locations where contract information is stored or transmitted.
- Confirm the applicable requirements before purchasing tools or booking an assessment.
- Document current practices and compare them with the required controls.
- Assign owners and deadlines to gaps in access control, backups, monitoring, training, and incident response.
- Test that controls work, retain evidence, and follow the assessment and reporting path required by your contract.
