A customer called us to look at their camera system. Their issue was that when windy and rainy days come around, it would cause the camera to flicker. They have had one incident of heavy rain causing the POE switch to completely fail and replaced. Once we arrived on site, we were able to determine a few issues. The customer wasn’t using outdoor rated CAT5e and/or did not protect their non-outdoor rated cable with exterior wiremold. Also, they had 2 cables with coupling to relocate the camera to a new further location.
The connection at the coupling were poorly weatherproof which could possibly cause the POE switch to get shorted out from heavy rain. We went ahead with replacing the cables that has coupling connectors with full runs and added wiremold to protect the cables from the weather. The customer was impressed with how big of a difference the house looks with wiremold running along the side of the house vs exterior runs.
