License Plate Recognition Camera Installation in Austin, TX

Need a clearer record of vehicles entering your property? Business Communication Solutions designs, installs, configures, and troubleshoots license plate recognition (LPR) camera systems in Austin and surrounding cities. We work with UniFi Protect AI-LPR cameras and other suitable platforms, including compatible cameras you already own or purchased elsewhere.

Capture plates where vehicles enter and exit

An LPR system focuses on a defined vehicle lane and uses software to find and read license plates in the captured image. Depending on the platform, authorized staff may be able to search plate events by time or number and review the related footage. It can help a hotel, retailer, apartment property, warehouse, business campus, or parking facility investigate vehicle activity at its entrances and exits.

LPR records a plate and vehicle event; it does not, by itself, prove who was driving or that a vehicle belongs to a particular guest or customer. We plan the use case and access process with your team before selecting equipment.

LPR cameras for dumpster areas and illegal dumping

Believe it or not, dumpster areas are another practical place for license plate recognition. Businesses, apartment properties, and waste facilities may face unauthorized dumping or vehicles leaving bulky items beside a dumpster. A dedicated LPR camera aimed at the access lane can help document a vehicle’s plate and the time it entered or left.

We recommend pairing the plate view with an overview camera pointed at the dumpster enclosure. The overview footage shows what happened, while the LPR camera may provide a plate record to help your team investigate. A plate alone does not identify the driver or prove who left the items. Placement, lighting, vehicle path, access permissions, and retention settings should be planned for the property.

Why a standard overview camera may miss plates

A wide camera may show that a vehicle was present while leaving the plate too small, blurred, or washed out to read. A dedicated plate camera is tuned for a narrow capture zone, appropriate shutter speed, vehicle movement, and reflective plates. Many use infrared illumination so they can capture plates at night with little or no visible light.

Results still depend on plate condition, speed, headlights and glare, weather, camera distance, mounting angle, and the platform’s recognition software. BCS plans the physical view and tests actual day and night captures rather than promising a read of every vehicle.

UniFi Protect AI-LPR camera installation

  • Placement and cabling: Select a lane view and mount the camera at a suitable height, distance, and angle; run and test the network cable and PoE+ power.
  • Protect setup: Adopt the AI-LPR camera into a compatible UniFi Protect environment, update it, and configure the appropriate recording and access settings.
  • Night performance: Adjust optical zoom and LPR Night Vision where appropriate for reflective plates, then check sample captures in daylight and after dark.
  • Context coverage: Consider a separate overview camera for the vehicle, lane, and surrounding scene; a specialized night plate view may show little beyond plates and headlights.
  • Existing systems: Troubleshoot poor reads, misalignment, power and network issues, and settings on supported UniFi deployments.

Ubiquiti recommends close, low-angle capture and a daytime/nighttime review after setup. BCS can evaluate the actual drive lane against the UniFi AI-LPR setup guidance before mounting.

GNS Security GNC524-VB/LPR cameras

BCS sells and installs the GNS Security GNC524-VB/LPR, a specialized outdoor IP bullet camera for license plate recognition. Its published specifications include a 4 MP image (2688 × 1520), 8–32 mm motorized zoom lens, 140 dB wide dynamic range, infrared illumination for low-light scenes, IP67 weather resistance, and PoE or 12 V DC power.

The lens and mounting position are chosen for the actual lane rather than a wide parking-lot overview. We can supply the camera, run cabling, connect compatible recording equipment, and tune and test the plate view in daylight and at night. Published range and speed figures describe equipment capabilities; real-world reads depend on placement, vehicle speed, lighting, plate condition, and configuration. Review the GNS model datasheet or ask us to confirm the current model for your site.

Already bought your LPR cameras? We can install them

Yes. BCS can install and set up compatible LPR cameras that you already own or bought directly, including UniFi AI-LPR equipment. We first confirm the camera model, mounting hardware, cabling path, power needs, and whether your recorder or UniFi Protect console supports the device and desired features. Then we can mount, connect, configure, and test it on site.

Have an existing camera that reads some plates but misses others? We can inspect the view, lens settings, lighting, network, and recording path before recommending a replacement. Third-party LPR functions and integrations vary by model and software.

What BCS can help with

  • Site survey and lane-by-lane camera placement
  • Outdoor mounts, conduit, Ethernet or fiber cabling, PoE switching, and surge protection where appropriate
  • Camera, recorder, and UniFi Protect setup for supported equipment
  • Plate capture tests in daylight and low light
  • Pairing plate cameras with overview cameras for better scene context
  • Existing-system troubleshooting and customer-owned camera installation
  • Staff guidance on searching events and managing authorized access

We can start with one entrance or design a plan for multiple vehicle lanes. The final scope depends on the property layout, compatible equipment, and how your team needs to use the footage.

Plan access, retention, and responsible use

Plate events can become useful records for a property, so decide who may view them, how long they are kept, and how requests for footage will be handled. BCS can configure available account permissions and retention settings with your team. The property should align its camera use and any notices with its own policies and applicable requirements.

LPR camera FAQ

Can I use a general security camera to capture license plates?
Yes, in a carefully chosen location. A general camera may capture readable plates when vehicles pass through a narrow, predictable lane at a suitable distance and angle, with enough pixels on the plate and controlled speed and lighting. A wide overview of a parking lot is much less reliable, especially with moving vehicles, headlights, glare, or darkness. We assess the actual site and test sample footage before relying on it for plate reads.

How is a dedicated LPR camera different?
A specialized LPR camera is aimed and configured for a plate capture zone, with optics, exposure, and infrared settings suited to reflective plates and moving vehicles. Some models also recognize characters and support searchable plate events, depending on the camera and recorder. It complements an overview camera that shows the whole vehicle and scene.

Can an LPR camera read plates at night?
Purpose-built systems can use infrared and tuned exposure settings for low-light plate capture. We test the specific lane and camera; conditions can still prevent a read.

Do I need a second camera?
Often a separate overview camera is valuable. The LPR camera is focused on plate details, while the overview camera shows the vehicle and surrounding activity.

Can BCS install cameras I purchased myself?
Yes, if the camera and recorder or Protect system are compatible. We review the model and site requirements before scheduling installation.
